Sorry Batchmates for the very lousy updates. We're trying to keep you updated from time to time but McAdmin is very busy.

Anyway, here's the blast from the Christmas Reunion held on December 28, 2009 in Zibo Cafe along Narciso-Rizal Streets. The number of participants was impressive. The previous reunion was outnumbered. Hope we gather more in the coming events and activities.

This Christmas..

Christmas is fast approaching. And i was thinking that, same as me, everyone wants to make good deeds before the year ends. Or if not, make a worthy undertaking that is memorable and took only once in a year.

So here, please take a moment to answer the poll below.

If your choice is Bundle of Joy, can you pledge to share your unused and spare goods like toys for kids, shirts, jeans, or anything you think can give happiness to anyone? Perhaps a small amount to buy simple presents and share to the choosen recipient.

If your choice is Batch Reunion, can you swear to offer your active participation and cooperation, rain or shine? This is just every once a year anyway. A time where you'll get to meet fellow Batchmates you missed for years or decades.

If your choice is Feeding Program, is it ok for you to share a small amount to buy foods and participate in the actual distribution of foods?

2009 Alumni Homecoming Parade

Batch 98 produced a copious delegation during the 2009 Alumni Homecoming with batchmates aboard the kewlest float in blue themed Barrio Fiesta on September 12, 2009.

Thank you so much to those who joined the celebration and actively participated during the planning and preparation. Thank you to the generous batchmates who shared their blessings. We'll provide you update on the financial statement soon.

Let us grow our number next year. Dont get tired sharing your time in every activities.

Preparations are underway for the conduct of the 2009 SNNHS Alumni Homecoming. This year's hosts and Alumni Foundation Officers are on planning stage and agreed to hold a weekly meeting set every Saturday at 2pm.

Batchmates attended the 5th Caraga Mining Summit

Three Batch 98 Alumni participated in the 5th Caraga Mining Summit and Exhibition on April 23-24, 2009 at the Hotel Tavern Surigao, Surigao City with the theme, "Adopting Best Mining Practices through Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable and Self-Reliant Mining Communities".

Rennel Dalagan of DTI-RuMEPP facilitated the trade and exhibit booth of DTI as well as attended the discussion, Jessalyn Abonates of MRL Gold also took charge of their company exhibit, and Jun Piong of Surigao Chamber oversees and supervises the operation of the event as point person of the venue preparation.

The Caraga Mining Summit is a bi-annual conference of the mining sector in Caraga organized by the Chamber of Mines of Caraga Region and CREDO with the support of the DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau. The event is sponsored by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao under the USAID. Cooperators include the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, the City Government of Surigao, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Surigao Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Provincial Mining Investors Assistance Center.

The event culminated with a 2-day Jobs Fair held at the Hotel Tavern Surigao where a number of job applicants flocked the venue to seek employment. The Jobs Fair was facilitated by the Department of Labor and Employment-Caraga Region XIII through the Surigao Local Offices and Public Employment Services Office.

Around 300 participants coming from the different areas of the region and country attended the conference with dignitaries that includes H.E. German Ambassador Delia Albert who shared the thrust of Germany's assistance towards the development of the region.

Just to give clarifications on the issues being raised here, please allow me to respond to it blow by blow:

-Jun Piong, the current chairman of the batch, is anonymous in the batch back then, nor famous today. Lol. Honestly, I am among the inferior students way back high school. But that doesnt matter to me or less matter to everyone else. Though i am not known to the batch, what is important to me is I am known in the world i am revolving. What i perceived about your comment is that you are expecting someone popular to be the leader of the batch. Unfortunately during the batch reunion held last December 2008, there were only few who came. But that few i believed represents well. We even have there Ms. Shirley Alciso, a very known personality and among the responsible of the reunion.

As i've said before we're not here to politicize but rather to leave a legacy. And that does not require a popular leader. It only requires a dedicated and result-oriented individual.

"success story of m. reyes feat.? is she successful really? does she really exist? is her name popular in d country? what makes her successful?"
-First, our qualification in recognizing the successful individuals in our batch is not just popularity, though it matters a lot. I dont think you would agree that we will put here somebody who made it in the news but as a commander of the ASG or a bigtime syndicate head near to be shot dead.

We ought to recognize here our batchmates who, among the many qualifications, have survived life (the rag to riches style) and made good names in their field; may it be a farmer who have changed lives of his fellow field plowers. In short, we are looking for a success story not just a successful individual, looking for someone who is successful in his/her career and lives an inspiring life.

Hearing about the life of Ms. Mary Grace Reyes made me ponder that perhaps she qualified to be recognized as a successful individual. And of course she exist and you can see her in some print ads in Cebu. What i learn is that she have lived her decade extraordinarily. I already drafted her story and sent it to her but there was a problem somewhere that consumed my waiting so i dropped her from the list.

-We are and we need your help also. We are eyeing a few, but if you can suggest someone, we will be glad. And we are in need of somebody who has the expertise in writing stories. Volunteers please.

Remember, we are not paid here so we do not deserve the insults or non-sense immature criticisms but rather the support. We aim to establish a team here and live a better life by leaving a legacy. 1. Strategy in gaining more attendance during the fellowships

-Conduct quarterly get-together; expenses to be sponsored by the birthday celebrants within the quarter.

-For the officers and regular attendees to bring in at least 2 batchmates per fellowship. With this, a huge participation from the batch will be gathered. Thus, encouraging the others to partake.

2. Tasks realignment

-In line with the busy schedule of the Chairman, leaving other tasks hanging and idle, the other officers were called to actively partake in the urgent tasks such as the preparation of project proposals.

3. Forging of commitments/tasking

-Consolidation of individual emails c/o Verna

-On Genelyn Salazar’s concern for reapplication of HS Diploma c/o Karen

-Graphics design of batch tarp c/o Claire

4. Priority Project

-With inequitable funds versus the numerous projects identified for implementation, it was resolved to target at least one that is doable and low cost just to get started with an initial project this year. And resolved further to meet with the SNNHS Principal to coordinate a school project this summer that the batch can possibly undertake.

-Ms. Karen Alinsunod suggested to undertake Brigada Eskwela in SUCES, where she teach, where only labor force is needed for repainting and cleaning of the school.

5. Other matters

-Officers to alternately host the fellowship meeting. The hosting will be voluntary and not necessarily according to the order of the position. This is to add homey and closer bonds between the batchmates.

-Request batchmates to send their email addresses for the dissemination of solicitation letters.

Girlie's Birthday

Last February 20, 2009 was Girlie Dejolde's birthday.

The invitation call was late and emergency that's why only few came. Some of the invitees already took their dinner. Fortunate for me who eats dinner very late so i was able to join in.

We dined at a barbecue grill somewhere along the Bilang-Bilang then went to Jannex to hangout and celebrate her birthday. In the crowd we saw Frederic Bonilla and his partner and in another table beside us the group of Rhea Abian and Elizaga.

When anything else fails, the Batch 98 will not run out of an option...

Due to unavoidable circumstances where the supposed house party of Secretary Maribel Heider in celebration of her birthday last 31st of January did not push through (January 30 is her exact birthdate), we drove down to Bilang-Bilang's barbecue stands to look for our own version of a party. Almost all of us were hungry (assuming that we will be full during the party) that time.

After filling our tummy with enough barbecues, we had a one hell of a partee in Subangan (alert if there are eyebrows rising).

It was a blast of fun we did not expect. Not just ordinary chit chatting. There was a showdown in videoke scores, and most of all we all have a good laugh.

Highlights of the Agenda:
1. Donations/Solicitations Updates
-A batchmate working abroad who requested anonymity donated $48.96 (approximately P2,300) to the batch fund. Thank you so much Chinky!
-Online solicitations will be started this February for the batchmates abroad. Several of them who has contact with us have made their pledges and commitments.

2. Maribel's Birthday
-Batch Secretary Maribel Liquido-Heider who celebrated her birthday, January 30, 2009, invited the Batch to a dinner party in her place. Rendezvous: Caltex Bar, 6pm, everyone will convoy. (Update as of republishing this post, Maribel's birthday party was postponed due to health concerns).

3. Proposed Projects
-In addition to the identified projects, Ms. Jesalyn Abonates suggested a Computer Tutorial Training for the teachers in remote areas of the city. An accredited module of TESDA will be followed. While the suggestion is okay, the team would need computer sets for hands-on training of the trainees. Anybody who can offer help?

4. Job Matching
-To address unemployment of the batchmates, everyone who are looking for jobs are requested to send their resumes to the Chairman at snnhs98@yahoo.com for job and qualifications matching.

Other matters:
5. SEC Registration
-Mr. Bullo moved to register the Batch with the Securities and Exchange Commission to formalize the organization and gain official status. This is to qualify for whatever opportunities coming to the batch. More so, that Mr. Chairman found opportunity in forging partnership with the United Nations Volunteer Association, a UN group working for sustainable human development through the spirit of volunteerism.

6. Night Cafe
-As taken up in the previous meeting, the Chairman moved to delay registering with the Night Cafe management to further study its feasibility and while manpower volunteers are being scouted.

7. Colindong's assistance to the Batch
-As previously discussed here in the blog's shoutbox, Ms. Mylene Colindong showed great interest in providing assistance to the projects of the batch. A project profile was asked so that she can present it to the group who is interested in helping us in reaching with the needy in the community.

Donna Galve weds Joven Requina

Batchmate Donna Galve ties knots and exchanged vows of marriage with Mr. Joven Requina of Brgy. Honrado, San Francisco, Anao-aon last January 24, 2009 at the City Cathedral, Surigao City.

The wedding was attended by more than a hundred guests, relatives, friends, and loved ones who witnessed their ceremony of marriage led by Fr. Almario Alcala, DCS. Provincial Vice-Governor Noel P. Catre, whom Mr. Requina worked before, was one of the principal sponsors.

The reception followed at the City Cultural Center in City Hall celebrated by a short program of customs and traditions.

SPUS Variety Show

With me, friends Girlie Dejolde and Florinda Caba and newly wed couple Donna Galve and Joven Requina joined forces last Sunday, January 25, 2009 in watching the Variety Show organized by the St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS) as one of the activities in celebration of the St. Paul Day.

Thanks to a co-officer in the SPUS Tertiary Alumni, Randy Retulla, for the VIP treatment.. he placed us in the front row.

The show was very entertaining. It was a mix of modern and folk entertainment. But we particularly like the preservation of the latter. We enjoyed the interpretative dance of 'Anak', the folk dances including tinikling among others, and the harana.

Nostalgia

Last Saturday, January 17, 2009, was a return to the alma mater where I earned my higher education, the Saint Paul University Surigao, for an invitation to the Tertiary Alumni Association Meeting. With me is batchmate Karen Alinsunod who even though didn’t have plans to attend and just happen to be there to get the requested docs from the registrar, I was able to bring her in.

As far as i can remember, 2005 was I guess my last step in the institution that I consider the foundation of who I am now. Even though I frequently pass by the SPUS compound, I just couldn’t find the time or purpose to drop by. And I terribly missed going there once again. More so when I learned that a familiar figure of the institution has returned, now SPUS President Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC. She reminded me of my beloved boss, SNC Former President Sr. Marie Renee Javato SPC, to whom I served as a working student.

After some several attempts, the longing was finally given relief. Last Saturday was a renewed memory of acquaintances with the familiar faces of the faculty and staffs of the university. Together with Karen, I ramble around the facades and corners of the SPUS.

Although the meeting was for another purpose, for me it seems a homecoming and the cozy welcome of my friends in the crowd made my homecoming warm. SPUS is a home to me.

Anyway, the tertiary alumni meeting was called to gauge strategies that would encourage the college alumni to actively participate in the annual homecoming and other activities of the university. This is to address the disconcerting incidence of college alumni not participating in every homecoming and other activities of SPUS because for some reason college graduates seems alienated. I was nominated for president (by Dr. Guerra and Mrs. Ariar) but I turned down the nomination in favor of being the chairman of the SNNHS Batch 98. But eventually, I was elected as Auditor together with Karen elected as representative to the College of Teacher Education.

After the tertiary alumni meeting, we personally pay a visit to SPUS President Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC who have forgotten my face. Dean of Accountancy and Business Department Erlita Guerra accompanied me. The chit chat we had was an account of reminiscence. And i went out of the university warm-hearted and promised to visit as much as possible.

To those who feel the same nostalgia I had, tonight is very timely as SPUS organized a variety show starred by the institution’s premier talents. Tonight is the opportunity to look back and experience the Nicolanian/Paulinian spirit, whatever it is.

The variety show will run in January 22, 23, 25, at 7:30pm in SPUS Gym. Come, let’s watch!

The election of officers for the Batch 98 of SNNHS took place during the decade reunion on December 27, 2008 at the Fiesta Resort in Barangay Ipil.

Present were the few batch members who chose to partake, including the person responsible for the gathering, Class President Shirley Alciso, who were serious about creating a body that would handle the affairs of the batch in the forthcoming activities of the alma mater. I was elected Chairman out of insistence and because I am optimistic, irritatingly optimistic, I accepted the task and thought I am installed to do something.. a difference.

Many of the batch members didn’t personally know who the officers are so I would like to let you know some info about us, especially me who is unpopular and commoner then.

Conversation with Illac Diaz

Dear batchmates, i had a talk with Social Entrepreneur/Commercial Model and ED of MyShelter Foundation, Illac Diaz, last night regarding the possible assistance that we can provide to his future projects here in Surigao. Have you seen the Day-asan National High School building? It was his concept.

This is it:

He said, there is no pipelined project for Surigao for the moment as they are still in the pilot-testing stage of the Bamboo School, another kewl breakthrough in innovation. What a brilliant mind!

The concept of the Earth Bag School was furnished to the city and provincial government should our LGU wants to build another one. So what we need is wait for the updates from the LGU. I will personally follow-up with the Province regarding this so we can make our necessary preparations. May i remind you that the best service we can provide is in the construction phase, so magbanat-banat na ng buto. Hehe.

We will also wait for some updates from Mr. Illac Diaz should he once again decide to construct the Bamboo School here in Surigao. Saw the concept from his laptop and it is really really great. Imagine the bamboos live for 25 years.. Not only that, there was this another concept of cheap way of washing the laundries. Kewl.

I gave him my contact details, (and have a photo of the Earth School autographed by him. Least i can do. I have no guts to ask for a photo op. Haha)

MINUTES OF THE SNNHS BATCH 98 OFFICERS’ SEMI-MONTHLY MEETING

Highlights of the agenda:

The regular semi-monthly meeting will no longer be limited to officers’ attendance; it will become a fellowship activity for the general membership. This is to encourage participation from the batch members and enjoin them in decision-making. Everyone can join the meeting.
Batch Fund update. The SNNHS Batch 98 savings account with the SRBC was opened on January 8, 2009 by Chair Jun Piong and Vice-Chair Karen Myl Alinsunod. Details were posted in the blog.

It was temporarily named to the above officers since opening an organizational account requires a duly notarized resolution. The resolution was already prepared as of the date of the meeting and will be delivered to the SRBC for the needed amendments in the account.

Blog updates. The current blog layout was shown to the batch members present during the meeting especially to those who have yet accessed the site. And the proposed incoming articles were presented for solicitation of write-ups. These include the Batch Icons, SNNHS Hymn, and Success Stories of successful 1998 graduates. One identified was Dindo who was said is now a School Principal in Cebu.

The pool of writers will also be identified to do the write-ups for posting in the blog.

Solicitation Letters. Draft letter was presented for comments. Bullo commented that the letter should contain a monitoring number to avoid fraud and for tracking.
Joining in Night Café for revenue generation. The stall space that will be rented for P150 nightly every Fridays and Saturdays, at 6pm to 2am, shall be named SNNHS Batch 98. The officers and batch members can volunteer to man the stall. Compensation for the volunteers still to be discussed.

Unsolicited remarks against a batchmate(s). Bad remarks against the fault and misdoing of other batchmates shall be discouraged. This is to avoid division and conflict and, thus, encourages camaraderie.

Having no matters to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 9:15 in the evening.

Next meeting will be on January 30, 2009, Friday, 7:30pm. Rendezvous at Caltex Bar.

Batch Fund account now open!

, Yes, the SNNHS Batch 98 Savings Account is now accepting contributions from you our dear TFC Subscribers (batchmates abroad) and well fortuned domestic friends.

Last January 8, 2009, key officers Jun Piong and Karen Alinsunod opened the Batch 98 Fund at the SRBC with the initial fund of Php1,400.00 from the 200 pesos contribution of the officers.
The batch officers are very optimistic that this savings account will be eventually poured in by donations from batchmates who have made their way abroad as a way of paying back their good fortune. These donations that also includes domestic contributions will be used to fund projects and activities not only for the benefit of the Batch 98 Members but also to the community of Surigao. This is in line with the objective of the grown batch of 1998 SNNHS graduates which is to leave a legacy by sharing a care to remember.

Several revenue-generating activities were identified by the officers aimed at raising the fund. Some of these activities came from the brilliant ideas of the batch members who have shown great support to the objective of the batch. The officers are hopeful that these active members will grow until the majority is captured and get them involved in this undertaking. This will be made possible in part through information dissemination strategies including this blog.

By reaching the hearts of every 1998 SNNHS Graduates, the flow of contributions from them is expected and, thus in no time, the ideals of the SNNHS Batch 98 will be realized.

Highlights of the agenda:

1. BATCH 98 OBJECTIVE: “Leave a legacy: a share of care to remember.”
Being a decade older since high school years, the objective of the batch is to leave a legacy to the alma mater by actively participating not only in its social functions and causes but also to serve the community by conducting worthy and worth remembering activities.
Coming up with a BATCH FUND is the number one agenda and priority activity of the officers. One identified activity to generate fund is to seek help from the fortunate and well-blessed batch-mates, working domestic and abroad. Initial fund used to open an account with the SRBC will be coming from the contributions of the officers for 200 each. During the meeting, P1,200 was collected.

To gather ample amount, it was also suggested to conduct revenue-generating activities like raffles and Solidarity Nights.

This fund will be used to finance future activities of batch 98 including but not limited to attendance in yearly alumni homecoming. President Jun Piong is optimistic to gather a good number of attendances during the conduct of these homecomings.

To establish transparency and update the batch with the Batch Fund’s finances, a monthly financial statement will be posted in the batch blog.

2. BATCH 98 BLOG account: http://snnhs98.blogspot.com/ is now functional to serve as the bulletin and medium of exchange of information and updates of Batch 98. The blog will initially contain:
-Welcome message
-Article on Alumni 2008 participation c/o Pauline Alfante

-Roster of 98 graduates by section

Contributions like write-ups on batch gatherings, class gatherings, travels and gigs with friends, weddings, christenings, and other events are welcome. Assistance from volunteer experts in creating the blog layout is also welcome.

3. BATCH 98 YAHOO! GROUP will also be created to keep in touch with the batch online. Email addresses of batchmates will be gathered.

4. SOCIAL OUTREACH PROGRAM will be conducted to the community once an ample amount of fund is collected. Community programs will include:
-Feeding Program
-Bundle of Joy
-Sponsor a Student Scholarship Program
-Donate a book
-Home-building assistance in tandem with the Gawad Kalinga

5. HAND A JOB is another program aimed at helping unemployed batchmates find a job by establishing linkages with other batchmates for referrals. A database of Batch 98 Profile will be created to identify who are capable of helping the unemployed members of the batch. A link with the working professionals around the country will also be created.

Perfect 10 at 27: The Reunion

It was the spirit of unity and camaraderie, and total excitement that brought the SNNHS Batch 98 as they took pride in celebrating its most anticipated first reunion on December 27, 2008 in Fiesta Resort, Brgy. Ipil, Surigao City.

The theme “Perfect 10 at 27” speaks of the decade since the high school years of the batch and the present time where one has grown mature, accomplished and responsible.

The crowd of 1998 graduates who were present in the reunion was amazed with the short fireworks display, shared on the delicious foods courtesy of some of the generous alumnus, sang and dance, and posed under the never ending flashes of the cameras (huh?! feeling celebrities). Mixed emotions also prevailed on air as everyone reminisced and shared their perfect moments during their high school years. (Char!)

Ms. Shirley Alciso, Class 98 President, who is one of the people behind the gathering welcomed the participants.

Another highlight and primary objective of the reunion was the election of batch officers who will carry out the responsibility of promoting a legacy for the batch 98. That night, they were successfully chosen.

Some of our batchmates shared their insights about the reunion and here are some of them:

“My name is Bernadeth. Guess who? Hehehe. Actually, I’m Procoro Peligro, Jr., your batchmate. I enjoyed the pool of the resort. One of the owners is our batchmate, Ms. Mechell Ballesta. Then, I met Michael Sala. He is so nice! Joke… Hope you all guys will join the next reunion. Haha!”

“I can’t believe it has already been 10 years since we graduated from high school. I never thought that our batch would have a reunion because first we didn’t have our class yearbook (what a shame! Hehe).

It was nice going to the reunion because we got to interact with our batchmates. We got to do what we haven’t done when we were still in high school. Hopefully, the next and the succeeding reunions will be as happy and as enjoying as the first. Kudos to the organizers and the officers!” –Engr. Bethsam Dulpina

This was, indeed, the worth remembering and inspiring event during the first reunion of SNNHS Batch 98. The officers posed high hopes that this will be followed by more attendance during the homecoming and yearly reunion.

The Surigao del Norte National High School Batch 98 participated the 2008 Grand Alumni Homecoming on September 12, 2008. Approximately 30 individuals from the said batch attended the yearly event. It was hosted by batch 1973 which celebrated their Emerald Anniversary this year.

The celebration commenced with a Holy Eucharistic Mass at the campus then afterward the Grand Parade of different batches rolled out with their fabulous floats and beach-inspired attire. A series of activities kicked off right after like the jampacked Hawaiian Night at the Provincial Convention Center where the individuals of excellence in the service of the province and the country that the institution has produced was recognized.

The night is young and so are we... so we look for a venue that is something noisy, something groovy, and somewhere to exhaust the high adrenaline rush of the batch 98. Mario's Grill (c'mon pay us for this ad) was just right there to host our groove..

Shake that booty

Indeed the homecoming of our school has reached its peak, successfully conducted various activities and produced excellent graduates.

Long live and love Surigao High and we pledge our undying love, Hail alma mater dear".

To the host batch of the 2008 Alumni Homecoming, congratulations for a job well done.
